Our Founder

Karen Langer, Founder of Retrieving Independence

The dream that is Retrieving Independence began more than 5 years ago, when our founder, Karen Langer, saw a video of service dogs in action.   So moved by what she saw, she became determined to learn to train these amazing canines to partner with people who would benefit greatly from their service.   After a life of loving and training her personal dogs, it was a natural transition.

Evolution of Retrieving Independence

RI began its journey as a non-profit and a member of Assistance Dog International (ADI).  We have since faced the fact that to succeed in the non-profit world, we would have to grow very large and require expert fund raisers on staff to compete for donor funds with the very large Organizations.   We would spend a good portion of the money we raise trying to raise additional funds.  We now ask that our client pay for the dog they receive.  This can be accomplished by individual fund raising or simply paying for the dog out right.

Tour Our Facility

Training FacilityRetrieving Independence resides in a 42,000 square foot facility located on a 300 acre working farm in beautiful rural Linden, Tennessee.

The facility has a reception area and 3 administrative offices.  There are two training areas: one large for skill training and one that resembles a living area to expose and train the dogs in a home type environment.

We have six large kennels which allow us to accommodate up to 12 dogs.  For our breeding program we have two whelping rooms together with a bathing area and a health care area.

Goals

Our Goals

Our first two years will be spent training puppies that have been donated and purchased.  We look forward to placing 6 dogs by the end of our 2nd year.    During this time we will also be starting our breeding program.

Our History

RI began its journey as a non-profit and a member of Assistance Dog International (ADI).  We have since acknowledged a need in the industry to provide the opportunity for an individual to purchase an assistance dog.  RI evolved in to a LLC in December of last year.

Testimonials

We have been able to finally get a dog for our son, and Retrieving Independence helped us get a dog sooner than if we had to be put on a waiting list.
